I received this book as a gift, and was enthralled with the idea of a modern Shakespeare like approach to a modern tragedy. Once started, I was not able to put it down until finished. The plot was as familiar as Romeo and Juliet, but knowing what happens is not a distraction from Shakespeare, and it does not distract for this story either. The way it is written draws one into the story and fixes your attention to the well know plot.I loaned it to one of my best friends, and he also was unable to put it down, and I literally watch him read the whole book without getting up once (it is a rather rapid read, about an hour or two, if fully absorbed).
Déjà vu, another friend took the loan and also devoured it in one bite.
Recommend the book? If this gets out it will be a classic.

This book is a great read!
It is highly recommended.It gave me a renewed appreciation of the wonderful Shakespeare set in modern times.

One of the most creative / innovative works I've read lately. Entertaining! GREAT!
To come across this little gem is like finding a lost diamond ring while wandering down a sandy beach. It is a humble masterpiece, borne of an obvious love of Shakespeare-- not mere bardolatry, but written with a real feel for the expression of dialogue and humor in the framework of iambic pentameter, and excellent pacing in the telling of the story; always amusing, sometime eloquent; with the details of the legendary story of the Prince of Brentwood filtered through the experience and learned eye of an experienced lawyer. All of us were swept away, two decades ago, now, by a tsunami of reportage of the famous case, to the point where we felt we knew all these characters as intimately as family (if not more so), and everyone had an opinion about "how (if?) he did it." But it took this talented author, with the distance of hindsight and a great deal of wit, to show us that we could now comprehend the entire tragic and amazing series of events most effectively by portraying it as if in a different and still more distant time, in a more archaic style of writing fitted to the drama. In the process, the story of the murder and prosecution is retold in a way that elevates it, properly, to the stuff of historical legend, not mere recent tabloid fodder, while simultaneously, and with great justification, lampooning many of the lead characters. It is also laugh-out-loud funny. This book has now been rightfully awarded a Gold Medal as one of the Outstanding Books of the Year by the Independent Publisher Book Awards for 2014, acknowledging the author, Michael Monk, as one of our great literary humorists.
